{"id":15820,"date":"2024-06-04T10:46:19","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T09:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorersagainstextinction.co.uk\/blog\/?p=15820"},"modified":"2025-02-24T11:24:49","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T11:24:49","slug":"moving-elephants-off-to-tsavo-for-tino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorersagainstextinction.co.uk\/blog\/moving-elephants-off-to-tsavo-for-tino\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving Elephants: Off to Tsavo for Tino"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Elephant collaring in Kenya is a critical component of modern conservation efforts aimed at protecting these majestic creatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By fitting elephants with GPS-enabled collars, researchers and conservationists can monitor their movements in real-time, gathering invaluable data on their migratory patterns, habitat use, and behaviour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This information is crucial for several reasons: it helps in identifying and mitigating human-elephant conflict, understanding seasonal migration routes, and protecting vital habitats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collared elephants can be tracked to ensure they avoid poaching hotspots and to enable rapid response teams to intervene if a collared elephant enters a high-risk area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mara Elephant Project and partners&nbsp;have deployed over&nbsp;<strong>80&nbsp;satellite tracking collars<\/strong>&nbsp;in Kenya.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tino&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tino, a well-known big bull elephant in the Tana River area of Kenya&nbsp;was collared in January this year. Like the Greater Masai Mara, this region is experiencing high levels of human-elephant conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took one week for big old Tino to get himself into trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tino wandered into a heavily developed area.
