With <strong>over 350,000 visitors annually<\/strong>, it remains one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in the world. The park is home to the legendary <strong>Great Migration<\/strong>, abundant predator sightings, and some of the most spectacular landscapes in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving <strong>north from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)<\/strong> in the south to the <strong>Mara River<\/strong> on the Kenya border showcases a <strong>beautiful transition in landscapes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of the <strong>key areas of the Serengeti<\/strong>, their <strong>pros and cons<\/strong>, and what to expect in terms of <strong>topography, wildlife, and safari<\/strong> based on my experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-ngorongoro-conservation-area-southern-serengeti-calving-season-predator-action\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. You&#8217;ll notice the Maasai settlements gradually disappearing as the NCA transitions into the Serengeti. The only other tell-tale sign is some white marker posts along the boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The south-western region has three key sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)<\/strong> \u2013 Offers <strong>both wildlife and cultural experiences<\/strong> and the chance for visitors to experience the iconic Ngorongoro Crater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ndutu (Lake Masek area)<\/strong> \u2013 Most accessible and busiest area during <strong>calving season<\/strong> because the lakes provide the main source of water. There is also plentiful lodging options for visitors at various price points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kusini Plains<\/strong> (west) \u2013 More remote, with fewer more high quality lodgings and much <strong>lower vehicle densities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find this Serengeti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.serengeti.com\/map.php\">map<\/a> useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"wildlife-best-time-to-visit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wildlife &amp; Best Time to Visit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>December to March<\/strong>, <strong>thousands of wildebeest calves<\/strong> are born in just a few weeks, attracting predators like <strong>lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals<\/strong>. Around one in three calves born will survive to maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"pros-cons\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pros &amp; Cons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Best for<\/strong> predator action, calving season, and vast open plains.<br>\u2705 Easily combined with a <strong>Ngorongoro Crater safari<\/strong>.<br>\u274c <strong>Seasonal<\/strong> \u2013 best from <strong>December to March<\/strong> but expect high vehicle densities in peak areas, and pressure on mammal sightings.<br>\u274c <strong>Few permanent camps<\/strong>, mobile camps are the best option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"best-way-to-experience-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Best Way to Experience It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay in a small <strong>mobile camp<\/strong> that follows the migration\u2014these camps move position 2 or 3 times a year to always be close to the herds. In the south, <strong>Kusini h<\/strong>as fewer lodges\/camps and is therefore <strong>quieter<\/strong> than Ndutu. The Grumeti River provides the first big test for young wildebeest <strong>before<\/strong> they face the more challenging Mara River further north. As a unique wildlife spectacle, the river crossings draw a crowd and prices peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of migration season, this area is a wild paradise with fewer visitors and some attractive lower rates at really fabulous lodges. Wildlife sightings can be more challenging between January &#8211; March because the grass is long and lush after the short rains (November time),  providing lots of cover for wildlife. However, it is still possible to see a wide variety of species amidst a stunning landscape.
