The weather, even in summer, is unpredictable and often colder than you expect, so having the right gear makes a big difference to your comfort. Once you\u2019re out on deck with the wind blowing, or bumping across a fjord in a zodiac, you quickly realise just how important the right clothing is. Here\u2019s what worked for me during a summer voyage (I travelled with my family at the end of June), when temperatures usually hover somewhere between 3\u00b0C and 7\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"clothing-for-svalbard-layer-up-for-the-arctic\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clothing for Svalbard: Layer Up for the Arctic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It might sound obvious when you\u2019re heading to the Arctic, but yes &#8211; it\u2019s cold, even during Svalbard\u2019s summer (May &#8211; September). Add in the wind chill, especially at sea, and you\u2019ll likely need more warm layers than you think. I speak from experience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The secret is a layered, interchangeable clothing system that allows you to adapt quickly to changing conditions. You won\u2019t need anything smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pyjamas:<\/strong> There were extra blankets in our cabin, but I slept on the hull side and found it cold at night. Packing PJs was a good call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"layer-breakdown\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layer Breakdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Base Layers:<\/strong> Breathable thermals (merino wool works well) for both top and bottom.<br><strong>Mid Layers:<\/strong> Fleeces, sweatshirts, warm jumpers (wool is excellent). Take a few to mix and match.<br><strong>Trousers:<\/strong> Trekking trousers or salopettes. I wore salopettes for all shore landings &#8211; great when you get splashed in the zodiac and warm enough for long hours on deck.<br><strong>Outer Layers:<\/strong> A warm down or synthetic jacket is essential. Our ship also provided a lightweight windproof shell, which was very welcome.<br><strong>Hat:<\/strong> For warmth and sun protection.<br><strong>Gloves &amp; Scarf\/Buff:<\/strong> Ski gloves worked well; I also kept a pair of fleece gloves in my pocket for quick access.<br><strong>Footwear:<\/strong> Trainers or walking boots with grip are useful onboard. Rubber boots are essential for landings (supplied by the ship). A 300\u2013400mm+ lens is best for <a href=\"https:\/\/puretravel.com\/blog\/2025\/07\/29\/svalbard-wildlife-how-many-of-the-arctic-big-five-will-you-see\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildlife<\/a>. Cold drains batteries &#8211; bring spares.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swimsuit: <\/strong>During some cruises you have an opportunity for a Polar Plunge! Highly recommended. We went in (twice) from the beach at Ny London. Towels were provided. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"toiletries-health-items\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toiletries &amp; Health Items<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Personal toiletries:<\/strong> Bring your own essentials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Moisturiser &amp; good sun screen:<\/strong> The Arctic air is very drying and the sun is fierce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Motion sickness remedies:<\/strong> Useful if seas get rough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prescription meds:<\/strong> Pack extras in hand luggage in case of delays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"travel-documents-essentials\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Documents &amp; Essentials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Passport:<\/strong> Svalbard is visa-free for many, but travel is via mainland Norway (Schengen rules apply).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Travel insurance:<\/strong> Must cover expedition cruising and emergency evacuation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credit card &amp; NOK:<\/strong> Cards widely accepted, but handy to carry some cash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offline entertainment:<\/strong> No Wi-Fi after leaving Longyearbyen &#8211; bring books, downloads, or podcasts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"final-packing-tips-for-svalbard\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Packing Tips for Svalbard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avoid cotton:<\/strong> It holds moisture and makes you cold. Snow remained on the hills, and some areas were wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s customary to remove outdoor shoes in museums and hotel public areas. Bring slip-ons for indoors if you don\u2019t like walking in socks. Try and avoid single-use overshoe covers (plastic).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At Camp Barentz, boardwalks protect the tundra. Trainers\/walking shoes were fine. It can be exposed, so layer up with jacket, hat, and gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eating out is informal &#8211; most people dress for warmth and comfort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"final-thought\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Packing for Svalbard is all about preparation and practicality.
