A <strong>single-dose vaccine<\/strong> against chlamydia,  a disease responsible for infertility, blindness, and death in wild koala populations,  has been approved for use nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"whats-new\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s New<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Developed over more than a decade by Professor Peter Timms and his team at the University of the Sunshine Coast, the vaccine is the first of its kind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some wild populations in Queensland and New South Wales, chlamydia infection rates reach <strong>50\u201370%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vaccine has shown that it can:\n<ul>\n<li>reduce the likelihood of infection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prevent progression of the disease, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in some cases, reverse symptoms in animals already infected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early trials suggest it could <strong>reduce mortality in wild populations by at least 65%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"koalas-in-crisis-more-than-disease\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Koalas in Crisis &#8211; More Than Disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlamydia is devastating, but it is not the only threat koalas face. Other pressures include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Habitat loss<\/strong> from land clearing, logging, agriculture and urban expansion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fragmentation<\/strong>, leaving small, isolated populations more vulnerable to cars, dogs, and environmental shocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate change impacts<\/strong>, with extreme heat, droughts, and bushfires destroying habitat and compounding stress and disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These combined threats pushed the Australian government in 2022 to list koalas as <strong>endangered<\/strong> in parts of Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"friends-of-the-koala-the-northern-rivers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friends of the Koala &amp; the Northern Rivers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, Explorers Against Extinction supported <strong>Friends of the Koala<\/strong> in the Northern Rivers, NSW, funding tree planting to help rebuild koala habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Friends of the Koala\u2019s <em>Native Plant Nursery Northern Rivers<\/em> grows and distributes food trees and other native plants to local landholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hundreds of thousands of trees have been planted to date, helping to create vital corridors and safe habitat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Northern Rivers is recognised under the NSW Koala Strategy as a <strong>stronghold for koalas<\/strong>, making this work especially important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"vaccine-habitat-restoration-the-only-way-forward\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vaccine + Habitat Restoration = The Only Way Forward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The single-dose vaccine is a breakthrough, but it is not a silver bullet. Vaccination requires capture, handling, and monitoring of wild animals &#8211; a process that is <strong>labour-intensive, costly, and reliant on significant funding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why the vaccine must be part of a wider conservation strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vaccine<\/strong> &#8211; reduces disease burden and mortality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Habitat restoration<\/strong> &#8211; ensures koalas have food, shelter, and safe movement corridors, reducing stress and risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community engagement &amp; policy protection<\/strong> &#8211; from limiting land clearing to reducing roadkill and dog attacks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these efforts can turn the tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-this-means-going-forward\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What This Means Going Forward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rolling out the vaccine in wildlife hospitals and eventually to wild populations will be critical, but it will take time and money.
