{"id":16723,"date":"2026-04-06T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorersagainstextinction.co.uk\/blog\/?p=16723"},"modified":"2026-04-06T10:51:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T09:51:46","slug":"reteti-resilience-and-longuro-a-story-of-survival-and-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorersagainstextinction.co.uk\/blog\/reteti-resilience-and-longuro-a-story-of-survival-and-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Reteti, Resilience, and Long\u2019Uro: A Story of Survival and Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the remote Mathews Range of northern Kenya, within the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is quietly redefining what conservation can look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reteti is the first community-owned and community-run elephant sanctuary in Africa, created to rescue orphaned elephant calves and, ultimately, return them to the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we visited in February, we arrived in time for the 3pm feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enclosure was deserted. Long lines of milk bottles, each calf\u2019s name scrawled in red pen, were lined up along the wall, just out of reach of curious trunks. A very young calf, no more than a month old, had been found trapped in a well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was in a devastating state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attacked by hyenas, he had lost around two-thirds of his trunk. He was bleeding and crying in pain. There was no sign of his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the veterinary team assessed him, the situation was so grave that they had to consider whether rescue was even viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Against the odds, Long\u2019Uro was lifted from the well and transported to Reteti, where an extraordinary effort began. Under the care of Reteti\u2019s dedicated keepers, led by Mary Lengees, and with specialist veterinary intervention, he received the treatment he needed to survive those first critical weeks and months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"learning-to-live-differently\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning to Live Differently<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An elephant\u2019s trunk is essential for feeding, drinking, touching and communicating. To lose most of it is life-changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, little Long\u2019Uro has learned to adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has found new ways to feed and to drink independently. The team turned to locally sourced goat\u2019s milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were transformative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goat\u2019s milk, enriched with a blend of supplements such as honey, coconut oil, oats, probiotics and moringa, depending on the elephant&#8217;s needs,  proved highly effective, supporting recovery, growth and overall health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long\u2019Uro, Lomunyak and Sera did not just survive &#8211; they thrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"from-innovation-to-impact\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Innovation to Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as a practical solution has grown into something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reteti\u2019s Milk to Market programme now supports 1,245 local Samburu women, who collectively supply around 680 litres of goat\u2019s milk each day to the sanctuary. We are fundraising for a new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/explorersagainstextinction.co.uk\/project\/feeding-the-future-milk-elephants-and-community-in-northern-kenya\/\">container-based milk handling and pasteurisation unit<\/a><\/strong> for the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a simple piece of infrastructure, but one with far-reaching impact, for the elephants and for the community behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"looking-ahead\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reteti\u2019s goal is always the same, to return elephants to the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long\u2019Uro\u2019s journey is still unfolding.
