Loss of Biodiversity

Our planet is rich in life – from plant and animal species to fungi and bacteria, biodiversity refers to the variety of all living things on Earth. While some species are yet to be discovered, others are being lost at an alrming rate due to human activity.

Biodiversity is an indicator of an ecosystem’s health. It means the ecosystem is productive and balanced and this in turn ensures it can withstand and recover from disease/disaster.  A healthy ecosystem can recycle nutrients, offer climate stability and provide services including medicine, food, water and important resources.  Diversity is something to get excited about.

Areas with high levels of biodiversity, for example, Madagascar, are called Biodiversity Hotspots – this is where you tend to find lots of endemic species (species which are unique to that place).

Changes in land use along with pollution, degradation of wild spaces and exploitation has resulted in a steep decline in biodiversity – with South America showing the biggest fall due to deforestation. The Amazon is thought to be home to at least 10% of all living species.

Our aim as a conservation charity is to preserve biodiversity and safeguard threatened species and their habitats.

All of our projects have biodiversity at their core. To explore some of these please click the images below or visit our Project Directory:
