In March 2023 we made a $1000 USD donation from reserve funds to support the Grevy’s Zebra Trust Scout Programme in response to the growing crisis in Kenya following a period of prolonged drought.
About Grevy’s Zebra Trust (GZT)
Established in 2007, the Grevy’s Zebra Trust aims to conserve and grow the Grevy’s zebra population in Kenya.
Grevy’s Zebra
Only 3,000 Grevy’s Zebra remain in the wild and GZT is the only organisation dedicated to their conservation in Kenya.Almost all Grevy’s Zebras – the world’s rarest zebra – live in the arid landscape of northern Kenya (Samburu, Laikipia, Shaba & Buffalo Springs). Easily identifiable, the Grevy’s Zebra is the largest species of zebra, with spectacular narrow black & white stripes, white belly, large ears and brown muzzle.
Drought
The Horn of Africa has been experiencing a pattern of severe droughts, most likely caused by La Niña. There have been three failed rainy seasons and we are on the cusp of a fourth, according to a press release by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) on 22 February 2023.
Teams at the Grevy’s Zebra Trust work around the clock to distribute fresh hay, dig shallow wells in dried-up riverbeds and work with the community on securing water for livestock and families during times of drought. They also work towards long-term solutions which include restoration techniques to heal degraded land and implementing land and livestock management plans.
Scout Programme
Teams monitor the status of Grevy’s zebra across the landscape, which is critical during the current crisis and during post-drought recovery. There are 29 scouts (21 are women). You can find out more about the programme here.
