The National Parks of the USA are some of the best places in the world to visit and stay in your own RV. Their campsites are spacious and well equipped and allow families to visit incredible natural spaces despite being on a tight budget. Just make sure you book up well in advance as they do get very booked up early on and don’t get forget to take all your necessary kit with you. Here are a list of some of our favourite national parks to visit in an RV.
Smokey Mountains
Mountain getaways give us a chance to really connect with our inner outdoorsman. The terrain yields some amazing hikes for all levels of fitness. You can usually find a hike that will reward you with some of the coolest waterfalls you’ll ever see. The Smoky Mountain National Park is a great place to head to and to fulfill all your mountain camping desires. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has so many great opportunities for outdoor fun including, hiking, biking, riding, rafting and tubing. Make sure to check out Cades Cove and Clingman’s Dome. On a clear day you can take in the beautiful landscape roughly 100 miles out in the distance!
Yellowstone
This is the oldest national park in the country and unsurprisingly is also the most popular national park in the United States. It attracts both American visitors and visitors from overseas and tourists come to stay in the myriad of hotels, lodges and campsites at Yellowstone. It is popular all year round and those visiting in an RV are protected from the cold and snow in the winter. It is always worth taking the best cover for your travel trailer with you during winter to protect it.
This park has a unique range of attractions courtesy to a collection of hot thermal springs and geysers. These hot springs cover much of the park and the heat allows plants and wildlife to survive the normally cold harsh winters. This has made it a centre for rare fauna and flora and completely unique landscapes and habitats.
Zion
Zion National Park is completely different to the two previous national parks but is definitely somewhere you must visit for its breathtaking landscapes. This is a rocky and desert landscape with incredibly scenic coloured rock featured throughout the park. The towering sandstone cliffs dwarf everything in the park and make you feel how ancient and spiritual this landscape is and has been for centuries. One of the most fun things you can do here is visit the other-worldly slot canyons (very popular on Instagram!) as well as rafting and kayaking along the rivers.
Acadia National Park
If you are closer to the northeastern states then you really should visit Acadia National Park. This park is often called the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast. This is the place to come if you love a true wilderness and you like a wild coastline, pine forests and green mountains. The cooler climate means there is a huge range of flora and fauna here including wolves and bears! It is truly beautiful here and this part of the world is also home to lots of picturesque coastal towns and villages. The national park makes a great part of a 2 week driving tour of New England in your RV.
