Assam has the largest population of one-horned rhinos in India – around 2,895 of them. More than 90% can be found in Kaziranga National Park- a popular wildlife ecotourism destination. One-horned rhinos can also be seen in Orang National Park, Manas National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
In 2013 as many as 27 rhino were lost to poaching in Kaziranga.
Although this number has decreased year on year, down to just one rhino in 2021, it is the first time in over 40 years that no rhino poaching at all has been recorded.
The park attributes its success to the work of the anti-poaching task force, including a K9 unit, and forest guards, as well as the role of technology such as drones in helping to keep the rhinos safe.
