Carbon for Conservation

Our Carbon for Conservation (CFC) scheme has a double benefit: the funds raised support tree-planting and re-wilding schemes while also helping to establish/maintain vital habitats for some of the world’s most iconic species including elephants in Kenya, and orangutans in Borneo. Many of these species are being pushed to the brink of extinction due to human encroachment on their habitats, including the clearing of large swathes of land for agriculture, mining, housing, roads and pipelines.

100% of your payment is donated to our selected projects. Explorers Against Extinction takes no fee for managing this programme & your payment is taken through the PayPal Giving Fund which charges no transaction fee.

This scheme relies on your support. Please make a donation of your choosing below, or if you are flying somewhere for business/leisure you may like to use our carbon calculator in the spirit of carbon offsetting.

Our CFC Calculator works out the carbon tonnage produced from your flights based on the mileage you are flying and the booking class you are travelling in. It provides a suggested voluntary donation.  Please select the country you are travelling to and not the city/airport. There are many factors to consider for an exact measurement such as aircraft type, routing/stopovers and the amount of baggage you are travelling with – our calculations are based on average values.

Seedballs Kenya – Bringing Forests Back to Life

Seedballs Kenya has pioneered a method of mass producing seedballs for low cost and efficient reintroduction of trees and grass species into degraded areas in Africa. Some of the funds raised by our carbon calculator go to purchase seedballs for dispersal by Mara Elephant Project based in the Masai Mara in Kenya.

One kilo of seedballs (around 450 balls per kilo) costs less than £5.

£100 can help to transform one square kilometre of arid acacia land into a habitat for 100s of species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects.

Orangutan Foundation – Indonesian Borneo Habitat Protection Programme

Orangutan Foundation’s Habitat Protection Programme focuses on two extensive conservation areas, Tanjung Puting National Park and Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. These areas combined total over half a million acres of prime habitat supporting close to 5,000 orangutans.

The tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra provide far more than a home for orangutans. They are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, providing livelihoods for local people and playing a vital role in mitigating climate change. On average, one acre of tropical forest in Indonesia stores 326 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e), the amount generated by about 69 passenger vehicles being driven for one year. For these reasons, we must ensure tropical forests stay standing.  For approximately £2 an acre, per year, Orangutan Foundation can continue their vital work to protect the forests.

In the spirit of carbon offsetting

When you cannot reasonably avoid carbon consumption –  air travel is a prime example-  you can choose to counteract or offset your carbon footprint by donating to verified projects that have been proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These range from maintaining or restoring carbon sinks such as forests to renovating factories to make them more energy efficient. The idea is that you offset an equal amount as a step to becoming carbon neutral.

Our Carbon for Conservation scheme provides a tangible way to support habitat protection and re-wilding projects in the spirit of carbon offsetting.

You make a donation to us based on the carbon footprint of your flights (based on average values as outlined). We donate 100% of those funds to projects which either protect or restore wild spaces,  or strive to create new habitat. Local people are employed by these projects – an additional benefit.

Our Carbon for Conservation scheme helps to raise vital awareness about habitat loss and climate change. We want to inspire positive action and show that individuals can make a difference through the choices they make.

Restoring the balance

Although protecting wild spaces and planting trees is a positive and important step, ultimately we must reduce emissions to halt climate change. Although the majority of greenhouse gas emissions are produced by big companies, as consumers going about our daily lives we can work to produce LESS waste and use MORE renewable energy.   Here are some simple steps:

1.Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

2.Turn down the thermostat.

3.Walk more. Drive less.

4.Buy energy efficient products.

5.Turn off lights and appliances.

6.Shop smart (there are many smart choices you can make as a consumer e.g, eat more seasonal, local produce to help cut food miles; support sustainability – look for produce with the BSI Food Assurance Kitemark; avoid plastic bags and excess packaging; support ethical fashion rather than fast fashion; support responsible eco-tourism; compost food waste and grow your own. )
