Polar bears depend on Arctic sea ice. The sea ice is home to their primary food source: seals. Without it, they face longer and less successful hunting forays and increased energy expenditure. These factors impact survival rates. Depleted sea ice also restricts access to denning areas.

His research has taken him from Spain to Gran Paradiso, from Arabia to the coastline of the British Isles. In 2018 his travels took him to the Arctic circle in search of polar bears, lovingly recorded, Mark captured the character of these magnificent creatures. From cub to adult Mark traced the subtleties of the bear, at once magnificent, endearing and at times fearsome. This year Mark joined the Sketch For Survival selection panel.

Lot 11 – Philippa Lavers

Lot 11 Philippa Lavers
Your Spirit Is The True Shield Soft pastels 61.5 x 69 cm Framed. Signed.
Orangutan’s are renowned for their strong maternal bonds, often fighting impossible circumstances to protect their young. Infants need their mothers for at least 7 years, which makes the plight of orphaned orangutans particularly tragic. It was really important to me to represent this bond and show this young one able to flourish with the security of his mother’s protection.
Orangutan – Critically Endangered. Having loved animals and wildlife since I can remember, it felt a natural progression to focus on them when I re-started my artistic journey five years ago. I’ve always been acutely aware of animal sentience and aim to represent this in my artwork using pastels, which lends a softness, depth and vibrancy to their expression. I hope to convey emotion and connection through the compositions and colours I choose.

Lot 15 Sophie Green
Plight of the Flightless Acrylic on Linen Canvas 100 x 70 cm Framed. Signed.
This work was displayed at Palace of Westminster in April 2024 as part of The Extinction Collection campaign
The emperor penguin is the largest of all the penguins. They are one of only two penguin species that spend the winter in Antarctica. Climate change and warming oceans are predicted to reduce the extent of Antarctic sea-ice, which would result in the loss of large areas of their breeding habitat. As the Antarctic circumpolar current gathers speed due to the warming oceans, ice shelves are quickly collapsing, leaving penguins with little option but to climb to higher shelves or jump into the water before they have finished their molt.
Emperor Penguins – Near Threatened (population in decline). Sophie Green is an award-winning conservation and wildlife artist from the UK, who specialises in capturing the photorealistic details of animals and their surroundings. She has dedicated her time and artistic work to raising awareness for issues surrounding animal welfare and the environment. She is part of the Sketch For Survival competition selection panel.
