Bradt Guides
It all began in 1974 on an Amazon river barge. During an 18-month trip through South America, two adventurous young backpackers – Hilary Bradt and her then husband, George – decided to write about the hiking trails they had discovered through the Andes. Backpacking Along Ancient Ways Peru & Bolivia included the very first descriptions of the Inca Trail.
Bradt is now a household name in the world of travel publishing with over 200 titles. Most of us keen travellers have a few Bradt guides on our book shelf and recognise Bradt as offering comprehensive guides, and often the ‘first’ guide available to a destination, for example, Madagascar.
Being first is a bit of a habit: Bradt also championed sustainable travel before any other guidebook publisher.
Focus for Survival Selection Panel
We are pleased to welcome Bradt Guides’ writers/photographers James Lowen and Nori Jemil to this year’s Focus for Survival selection panel.
James Lowen
James is an award-winning writer focusing on the nexus between wildlife, travel and conservation. Two of his 13 books, both published by Bradt Travel Guides, have won Travel Guidebook of the Year prizes, namely A Summer of British Wildlife: 100 Great Days out with British Wildlife and 52 European Wildlife Weekends: a Year of Short Breaks for Nature Lovers. James’s new book is Much Ado About Mothing, a travel narrative that views Britain through the filter of its rare and remarkable moths. As a photographer, James has hundreds of wildlife images.
Nori Jemil
Nori is an award-winning travel photographer, writer and videographer, and author of the forthcoming The Travel Photographer’s Way (Bradt Guides, Oct). A member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, she was recognised as their Photographer of the Year in 2017 and won Wanderlust magazine’s Travel Photo of the Year in 2011. She is published across a range of publications, from National Geographic Traveller UK, Conde Nast Traveller and inflight magazines, to BBC Travel and The Telegraph online. Nori has worked with a number of tourism boards and travel brands on commercial content and campaigns. She teaches film and photography in London and on specialist overseas tours, most recently in Patagonia, Iceland and Svalbard, as well as offering individualised one-to-one and company in-house training. Her photos have been exhibited in London, Milan and Madrid, and she speaks regularly at the National Geographic Traveller Masterclasses and at various panel events.
